Is your Diabetes medicine safe and effective?

Is your regular diabetic pill safe or effective? According to a study, the World Health Organization set standard is not followed by any of the five most prescribed diabetes pills in India. (As reported by Reuters March 13, 2018). These medicines which combine metformin (the first-line medication for treating type 2 Diabetes) with other medicines have not been tested as per the standards of WHO. Even then over 500 medicine brands are being marketed with these combos by Indian pharmaceutical companies.

In 2017, there were more than 72 million diabetes cases in India, as per the International Diabetes Federation. Already crowned as the Diabetes Capital of the World, Indians need to be more cautious about preventive measures as well as the about lowering of usage of drugs by healing through natural means.

In India, two third of the diabetic drugs are sold in two-drug formulations, which is termed as fixed-dose combinations. These combinations are very expensive and popular among pharmaceutical companies even though they are not in conformity with the international guidelines. Additionally, continuous monitoring of blood sugar levels of the patient is required to keep it in check.
 

The study reveals that all these five pills have got approval to be sold in India and among these only two have been approved in the U.S and just one in Australia. The safety and effectiveness of none of these drugs were evidenced in treating type 2 Diabetes.

Effective Diabetes treatment in India is very expensive. The regular blood sugar test and monitoring of health condition takes a toll on the patient. There has to be a balance between increasing high cost of diabetic care and awareness about self-monitoring and management. Early symptoms are not noticeable in Diabetes patient without testing so it is better to prepare and prevent as far as possible.

Regular physical activity with fibre-rich and whole grain diet is must for the diabetic patients and also for those who want to stay away from the disease. Obesity is often associated with it so maintaining a healthy weight can always reduce your risk. Diabetic patients need to be cautious while choosing the types of carbs they eat as they have a great impact on their blood sugar levels.
